As a part of every Field Program registration, $5 per day of the program price is used to purchase carbon credits from verified and sustainable projects in one of our frequent port countries. As of May 2026, our Field Program carbon credit purchases to date are equivalent to:

*Each emission reduction that is purchased is a ‘carbon credit’ - a unit representing one metric ton of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) that is stopped from being released into the atmosphere, or removed from the atmosphere. These credits are created by projects that are validated to an ICROA-approved carbon standard and are only released for purchase when a third-party auditing body has verified that the reduction has happened.

For the past three voyages (Spring 2026, Fall 2025, and Spring 2025), voyagers on Semester at Sea Field Programs have financially supported the following Climate Impact Partner carbon emission reduction project/s:

CIRCLE GAS SMART METERS, KENYA

Semester at Sea supported emissions reduction to date: 2,793 Metric Tons

The goal of the project is to accelerate access to gas cookers, especially among low-income households, which will significantly reduce GHG emissions, and other negative health and environmental effects associated with the use of traditionally unsustainable fuels such as wood, charcoal, and kerosene.

Across Kenya, families and businesses are adopting gas as a more efficient cooking fuel. However, those without the upfront capital to buy full gas cylinders are priced out of this cleaner form of cooking and still burn charcoal, wood, or kerosene for each meal.

This project distributes and installs, at no cost to the recipient, innovative smart meter stoves with ‘Pay as You Go (PAYG)’ plans, accelerating access to gas cookers and displacing the need for local households to burn charcoal, wood, or kerosene to cook. The smart meters also enable advanced Digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (DMRV) of the emission reductions.

PAST PROJECTS

Semester at Sea Field Program fees formerly supported two projects in India through Native.

Project Sky Wind, Maharashtra: The wind power created by this rural 96 wind turbine project provides alternative sustainable power that would otherwise be fed by fossil fuel fired plants and has results in an emissions reduction equivalent to ~14,000 US homes’ energy use per year.
Green Bricks, Madhya Pradesh: In addition to using energy efficient manufacturing processes, the Green Bricks for Residential and Commercial Buildings Project supports the use of waste materials by incorporating fly ash waste from thermal power plants in place of conventional raw materials. Fly ash can be safely included in construction materials, and its use in this way prevents the waste material from being dumped.
